Dental, vision and hearing coverage in Union City, NJ is one of the most common reasons people call us. Many are surprised to learn that Original Medicare pays for very little routine care for teeth, eyes and ears.

The good news is you have options. We explain what Medicare covers, what it does not and how plan extras or separate policies can fill in.

What Original Medicare Covers

Original Medicare covers some care tied to a medical problem. It may pay for an eye exam for diabetic eye disease, cataract surgery and one pair of glasses after it, or a hearing test your doctor orders to diagnose a problem.

It does not cover routine cleanings, fillings, dentures, routine eye exams for glasses or hearing aids. Those costs come from your own pocket unless you have other coverage.

Extras in Medicare Advantage

Many Medicare Advantage plans include routine dental, vision and hearing benefits. Coverage varies a lot from plan to plan.

  • Dental may cover cleanings and X-rays only, or also fillings, crowns and dentures up to a yearly dollar limit
  • Eye benefits commonly pay for one checkup a year plus a dollar credit toward glasses or contact lenses
  • Ear benefits can pay for a hearing test and part of the price of devices

We read the details with you. A plan with a high dental limit may matter more to you than a $0 premium.

Stand-Alone Dental and Vision Plans

People who stay on Parts A and B with a supplement can still add a separate dental or eye policy. Expect each one to carry its own monthly fee, a possible wait before major work and an annual payout limit.

We help you weigh the yearly cost against the care you expect to use, such as two cleanings and a crown, or new glasses every year.

Finding Providers Near You

Union City has dentists, optical shops and hearing centers along Bergenline Avenue, Summit Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard. Before you choose a plan, we check whether the providers you already see are in its network.

If you prefer a Spanish-speaking dentist or optician, ask the plan for a provider list, or ask us to help you search.

Hearing Aids Without a Prescription

Since 2022, over-the-counter hearing aids have been sold for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. They can cost far less than prescription devices. If your loss is greater, a hearing professional can guide you, and your plan's hearing benefit may help.
