Parts A and B: The Base Layer for Union City Residents
Original Medicare in Union City, NJ is the starting point for nearly everyone. It is the federal program made of Part A and Part B. Before you weigh any other plan, it helps to know what this base layer does and what it leaves to you.
We explain it in plain words, in English or Spanish, and we answer the questions people actually ask, like whether you need Part B if you still work.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Part A: Care in the Hospital
Think of Part A as your coverage when you are admitted: hospital rooms, a limited stretch in a skilled nursing facility following an admission, hospice, plus certain care at home. Anyone with roughly a decade of payroll tax history, their own or a spouse's, gets it without a monthly charge.
What you do owe is $1,736 up front per benefit period this year. That period opens on the day of admission and closes only once 60 straight days pass without inpatient or skilled nursing care.
Part B: Doctors and Outpatient Care
Part B is the everyday side: office visits, blood work, imaging, same-day procedures, walkers and wheelchairs, and a long menu of screenings. Expect $202.90 to come out monthly in 2026 unless your income puts you in a higher bracket.
Once you clear $283 for the year, your share is typically one fifth of each approved bill. That one fifth never stops, however large the year gets, and that open-ended exposure is why so many people buy something extra.
What Original Medicare Does Not Cover
- Pills and other prescriptions filled for home use, the job of Part D
- Cleanings, fillings, dentures and nearly all dental work
- Checkups to update a glasses prescription, and the frames and lenses
- Hearing aids, including the fitting visits
- Ongoing personal care at home or in a facility, like bathing and dressing help
Knowing these gaps lets you choose the right add-ons. One route keeps Parts A and B and layers on a supplement plus a stand-alone drug policy. The other route hands claims to a private Part C plan.
Signing Up the Right Way
People already drawing Social Security at 65 are normally signed up without lifting a finger, and the card simply shows up. Everyone else applies with Social Security, whether on its website, over the phone or in person.
Covered through a big company where you or your spouse still work? Holding off on Part B can be safe in that case. Small firms play by other rules. We help you check before you decide, and our turning 65 page covers the dates.
The Part B Late Penalty
Skip Part B at first eligibility without solid workplace coverage behind you, and Medicare tacks a surcharge onto every future premium: an added tenth for each whole year you went uncovered. It generally never goes away.
It is one of the most costly mistakes we see, and one of the easiest to avoid with a quick review.

Can I keep my job insurance and still get Medicare?
Frequently. A common move is to accept free Part A while postponing Part B under a big employer's plan. Confirm with human resources before you rely on it.
Will Parts A and B travel with me to Florida or Texas?
Yes. Doctors and hospitals nationwide that take Medicare will bill it the same way.
Does Original Medicare ever stop charging me in a bad year?
No. That is the biggest gap, and it is why most people add a supplement or choose an Advantage plan.
Can someone help my mother apply in Spanish?
Yes. We can walk your family through each step in Spanish.
