Getting Your Prescriptions Covered in Union City

Part D prescription drug plans in Union City, NJ can look alike on paper and cost very different amounts at the register. Two plans with the same premium may treat your heart pill or inhaler in completely different ways.

How Drug Plans Work

Part D is optional coverage sold by private insurers. It comes either as its own policy next to Parts A and B, or tucked inside most Part C plans.

Every plan publishes the medicines it pays for, called the formulary. Drugs are sorted into tiers. Lower tiers, often generics, cost less. Higher tiers, including many brand-name and specialty drugs, cost more.

Your 2026 Costs, Step by Step

In 2026 a plan may charge a deductible of up to $615 before it starts sharing costs. Past that point, each refill carries a flat fee or a percentage.

The good news is a firm ceiling. Once your own spending on covered drugs reaches $2,100 for the year, you pay nothing more for covered drugs until January. Insulin your plan covers is capped at $35 a month. For 2027, Medicare has set the deductible limit at $700 and the ceiling at $2,400.

There is also a payment plan option that spreads your drug costs into monthly bills across the year, instead of large charges early on. We can explain whether it helps your situation.

Pharmacies Matter in Union City

Many people here walk to a neighborhood pharmacy on Bergenline Avenue or Summit Avenue and know the pharmacist by name. Others prefer mail order. Plans sort pharmacies into preferred and standard groups, and the price of the same drug can change between them.

We look up your actual pharmacy before you choose. If a cheaper option means switching stores, we tell you, and you decide whether the savings are worth it.

Steer Clear of the Drug Penalty

Let more than 62 days slip by without solid drug coverage once you qualify, and Medicare adds a permanent surcharge to your Part D bill.

Coverage from a job or union may count as creditable. Ask your employer for the yearly notice that says so, and keep it with your papers.

Help With Drug Costs

Households with modest income and savings may qualify for Extra Help, Washington's drug cost subsidy. New Jersey also runs PAAD, a state program for eligible residents.

Our help paying for Medicare page explains how these work. If you have Medicaid too, look at dual eligible plans.

What Union City Asks About Drug Plans

My plan dropped one of my drugs. What can I do?

Ask your doctor whether a covered alternative works for you, or request an exception from the plan. You can also switch plans during fall Open Enrollment.

Am I stuck with this drug plan forever?

No. Each fall, mid-October through early December, you may pick a different plan for January. Checking each fall is wise because formularies change.

I am healthy and take nothing. Why bother with Part D?

A bare-bones plan now protects you from a surcharge if prescriptions enter the picture later. We can point out our least expensive choices.

Can I use a pharmacy in Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic?

Part D plans generally do not cover drugs bought outside the United States. Plan ahead and fill before long trips.

Figures are for 2026 and change each year. Last reviewed October 30, 2026.
